The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is designed to evaluate your cognitive skills deemed necessary for higher education in USA and many other countries.

The test has the following sections

A. Analytical Writing Assessment

This section contains two essays; Analysis of an argument and Perspective on Issue. Both essays of designed to test you critical thinking and persuasive writing abilities.

This section is given in two sections in which you need to write two essays showing your analytical skills. This score is not a part of your final GRE score – the perfect score being 340.

B. Verbal Reasoning

Your verbal reasoning abilities are measured in two sections of 20 questions each. Each section contains three different types of question; sentence equivalence questions, text completion questions and reading comprehension questions. Given the acceptability of GRE scores even for admission into MBA programs, two or three Critical Reasoning questions are also included in the reading comprehension questions.

C. Quantitative Reasoning

Your mathematical aptitude and reasoning abilities are measured in two section of 20 questions each. Each section contains two different types of questions; Problem Solving questions and Quantitative Comparison questions. As you need to work with a lot of mathematical and statistical measures in higher education, you conceptual knowledge of mathematics is tested thoroughly in this section.

II. The test format

A. ANALYTICAL WRITING ASSESSMENT – with two sections (issue and argument essays)

Type of questions: essays

Time: thirty minutes for each section

B. VERBAL REASONING – with two sections of 20 questions each

Type of questions: Multiple choice questions, Multiple Answer questions and Select the sentence questions

Time: 30 minutes for each section

C. QUNATITATIVE REASONING – with two section of 20 questions each

Type of questions: Multiple choice questions, Multiple Answer questions and Fill in the blank questions

Time:35 minutes for each section

D. EXPERIMENTAL SECTION – an undeclared/declared scored section is typically given from either Verbal reasoning or Quantitative reasoning sections.

Type of questions: as given above

Time: as given above

The first two sections of GRE are typically Analytical Writing Assessment sections. However, the next five sections can be given in any order. If an undeclared verbal or quant section is given, you will not know the difference between scored and unscored sections. Thus, you should work with all sections with equal care and sincerity.

There are two major changes in the Revised General GRE.

a. Unlike the old pattern of GRE in which you cannot go back to a question after you answer it, the Revised GRE General test allows you to move back and forth in a section. However, once you exit a section, you cannot see the questions anymore.

b. The computer adaptive nature of the earlier GRE is revamped. Within a specific section, the test does not have computer adaptivity. But, the adaptive nature still exists between the sections; the computer selects the second verbal / math section basing on your performance in the first verbal / math section.
